So apparently if you break the knob off on one of these older Whirlpool washers its not as simple as putting on a new knob. In the second picture you can see the end of the pin that goes through the program wheel is snapped off. After browsing for new switches online I learned they are way too expensive and take way too long to get here. So to try to prevent getting a new washer that needs a wifi network before it will actually wash clothes, I reverse engineered the program wheel (or cam wheel) pin so I could use a standard knob with a screw to try to prevent this from happening again.

If you decide to take this on be VERY careful taking your switch apart. To start the switch isn't screwed or clipped together it uses melted plastic rivets. You will have to cut them off and drill holes for screws. I recommend taking off the connector part off first. Then take the top cover off. This will help reduce the springs and things trying to get out. Take lots of pictures of disassembly. I didn't and it almost bit me.

A few design notes:

  • Knob for Mice was an accident I set the diameter of the switch to the radius I measured sooo it works but its very small.
  • Knob for humans is not yet tested.
  • The screw hole in the end of the pin and the knob are based on a random wood screw I had on my desk so you might want to look into that.
  • You may not need the L bracket. It was a part I broke during disassembly. It is the part that pushes all pins to the open position when you push the knob in.
