For years now for some reason i never got around buying or designing a locomotive service cradle even though it's something that would come useful quite often. The only other design on printables (that i could find) is good although i thought that something more simple would suffice. So as i had bunch of leftover 20mm acoustic foam, i designed to whip up a design of my own:
Introducing, The Loco Cradle!
A simple design the uses off the shelf 20mm acoustic foam. Simply print it out and glue in some foam and it's ready for use! Can also be expanded with 140mm “tender” modules or printed on their own for smaller locomotives or printers. The cradle has many small indents for temporarily storing screws and other small bits during the servicing process. The indents are spaced in such a way that you can easily categorize them and put them roughly where you pulled them out from.
3 useful sizes are provided:
50mm, the smallest of the bunch. Useful for coaches and wagons or smaller scales like N (this is just hypothetical though, i don't have any N scale stuff)
80mm, middle of the road, just right for H0/00 scale. Not too tight, not too loose.
90mm, widest of the bunch and the one depicted in the thumbnail pictures. has about 5mm of empty space between the walls and the loco when put in the middle. This might be better suited for locos with delicate detail although it has enough room for the loco to roll around a little.
More modules might be added in the future
Printing:
simply download the size that suits your needs and split the objects in slicer. Any layer height and material will do. The smallest version can be completely printed without supports. supports are recommended for the dovetail connector holes for the bigger versions. no supports otherwise
Happy Printing! And don't forget to post makes!
