It's a 2 foot wide circle with a 1 foot-ish wide hole in the middle of it that rotates with low friction. My idea was to have a 3d scanner mounted on the edge and go around the object rather than the object rotating. Also to be able to be able to just move something up and down in the hole to capture it more easily. Conversely, if it's strong enough, to be able to have someone stand on it and rotate them with a stepper motor.
I bought a bag of 6mm ball bearings for next to nothing on amazon, so I am using them up as well. ZYsteelball-(300pcs, 6mm) Chrome Steel Bearing Balls Precision Ball G25 : Amazon.ca: Industrial & Scientific
You just tap the ball bearings into the hole and somehow they stay there, the models have a 7mm spherical hole and the groves use the 6mm dimension. you need 4 of the inner track with the bearings and 4 of the outer track for top and bottom. There are screw holes to do something with wood.
The outer edge uses gt2 tooth gear shape, so can be used with a belt or direct stepper motor, in theory. The belt guide is if you want to use it with a long gt2 belt loop (6 mm), just print 4 and super glue on top. (Not sure if you can buy one that big, but could make one, essentially it's shaving the top of one end and the bottom of the other and cleaning the grease off and use contact cement). Could do it direct drive but the belt would be easier on the plastic and better for backlash probably.
