With my first attempt to upgrade my Ikea Lack table with multiconnect wall mounts areound the edges, I have spent a lot of time with a tape measure, speed square and pencil to precisely mark where to place the mounts. Only to find out in the end, that they got ever so slightly misaligned and practically useless.

I wanted to do something similar for the kids, hanging the bins for crayons, pens and stuff and this time it had to work, so I have created this jig to speed up the procedure, but mainly, to have all mounts equally spaced.

The jig:

  • Width of 5 multiconnect slots
  • 3 slot ends
  • 2 of the slots are cut throgh to tighten the screw (4 or 4,5 mm ocuntersink woodscrews should fit)
  • 2 holes (3mm diameter) marking the next screw placement
  • 25 mm or 50 mm spacing of the mounts
  • doublesided - you can go left to right or right to left
  • Dimensions are ment to hit the middle of Lack table

How to usee it:

Off course, you can do whatever you want, but I had two drills ready (one with PZ2 driver bit and one with 3mm drill bit - the vinyl venir can be a PIA to drive a wood screw into) and a clamp proved useful. So, just for inspiration:

  1. Place the jig with the “holes” side 12,5-ish mm from the edge and clamped it to the desk - that places the centre of the first mount 25 mm from the edge (that is where the leg screw is, but with short screw it shouldn't be an issue. It wasn't even with 35 mm long ones tough…)
  2. Use the hole in the jig as a drill guide to cut through the venire, then remove the jig.
  3. Drive the woodscrew in through the middle of the mount, do not tighten
  4. Slide the jig over the mount, use one of the cut through slots, now tighten fully, the jig will keep it flush and aligned.
  5. Predrill another hole, you can choose between 25 or 50 mm spacing. You don't need to clamp it down anymore, the mounts will hold it in place and flush.
  6. Rince and repeat until you are out of table coordinates… or out of mounts.
