Open AIR Valve: Open-Source Smart Ventilation Valve

The Open AIR Valve is a fully open-source motorized ventilation valve designed to enable demand-controlled ventilation in residential and professional environments. It allows precise control of airflow per room, improving air quality, comfort, and energy efficiency. This valve was made to fit in the Ducobox Ventilation systems (Silent, Focus and Silent Connect)

This project was developed to integrate seamlessly with Home Assistant using ESPHome, while remaining fully customizable thanks to the included STEP design files.

Unlike traditional passive ventilation valves, the Open AIR Valve can dynamically open or close based on environmental conditions such as CO₂ levels, humidity, temperature, Nox and VOC. Or whatever locally connected sensor you use.

Key Features

  • Fully open-source hardware and design

  • Complete STEP files included for easy modification

  • Designed for Ducobox Silent, Focus and Silent Connect.

  • Precise airflow control using stepper motor actuation

  • Position control from fully closed to fully open (and anywhere in between)

  • Uses a ESP32

  • Native ESPHome and Home Assistant integration

  • Autonomous operation possible without Home Assistant -> See YAML config.

  • Optimized for reliable homing and long-term operation

  • We tested ~ 1000000 opening and closings of these valves.

Typical Use Cases

  • Demand-controlled ventilation per room

  • CO₂-based bedroom ventilation

  • Automatic bathroom humidity extraction

  • Zone-based ventilation optimization

  • Energy efficiency improvements

  • Smart home ventilation systems

Design Goals

This valve was designed with the following priorities:

  • Reliability and repeatability
