Hi All!
I made an enclosure for the Racebox Micro. The main appeal to me about the Racebox Micro is its compact size however I was really disatisfied with all the available cases that included housing for a Li-po battery as they were all pretty bulky which defeated the entire point to me. I got pretty obsessed with trying to think of ways to cut down on the size and this is the result. (it still fits in the carrying case it comes with!)
Materials:
M2 x 4 x 3.2 ( x 2 ) (affiliate link)
Micro mini slide switch ( x 1 ) (affiliate link)
M2 * 8 screw ( x 2 ) (affiliate link)
acrylic photo holder (non affiliate link)
x-acto knife (affiliate link)
E6000 glue with applicator tip (affiliate link)
Lipo Rider Plus (Charger/Booster) - 5V/2.4A USB Type C (non affiliate link
500mah li-po battery
****** Disclaimer ******* I did not purchase this battery from anywhere, I harvested it from a cheap rechargeable wireless mouse. Any lipo battery should work (mah variance based on your desired run time) but the case is designed around the one I have that is 8.5mm x 19mm x 30mm, as long as it is this size or smaller, should work great.
Instructions:
1.) Using clippers and a Dremel, cut off the plastic battery clip from the LipoRider board. Also cut a straight line into the board removing the entire section dedicated to the USB-A female plug as this entire section is redundant and not needed. Be sure to avoid disrupting the circuitry, this should be easy as it is clearly visible. Final dimensions should be approximately 25.3 mm x 35.3 mm.
2.) Estimate the wire lengths needed by test fitting all internals into the enclosure. Afterwards, begin soldering the following:
Black wire = (GND/(-) Red wire = (+)
Racebox (+) -----> LipoRider (5V)
Racebox (-) -----> LipoRider (GND)
Battery (-) -----> Lipo Rider (GND)
Battery (+) -----> Micro Slider (Center Prong)
Micro Slider (Outer Prong) -----> LipoRider (BAT)
3.) Plug in the USB-C charger to ensure everything is properly functioning. ***** The LipoRider board is finnicky, it may only charge with a USB-C cable with a USB-A plug on the other end with a USB-A power brick. *****
4.) Using soldering iron, insert heat sinks into the two screw holes in the top enclosure
5.) Place clear acrylic of your choosing onto the outer top portion of the top case to estimate amount needed for the window. You can source this from your choosing. I used some clear acrylic photo holders from walmart, the thickness of what I used was ~1mm thick. Using a ruler, score the acrylic to the needed dimensions, afterwards remove protective film.
6.) Carefully apply the E6000 using the included applicator to form a small bead along the inner perimeter of the window area (avoid applying too much as it may compress out into the viewing area obscuring the view from the outside.)
7.) Compress the slider into the holder of the lower case, you can use the blunt end of a pen to snap into place. Afterwards, insert the battery and LipoRIder board.
8.) Insert the button into the top case. You can use a dremel to clean off edges so it doesn't catch.
9.) Place the racebox micro board into the top case, and screw in the m2*4 screws.
10.) Snap the top and lower cases together. You can use a small extra bit of E6000 along the inner lip of the bottom case for extra security.
11.) Get out on the track and record some lap times!
I have been using this for karting primarily. At some point I intend to make an alternate version of the bottom case which has built in loops so I can attach some straps to use as a belt. I intend to use a dog leash I bough from walmart since it was cheap and already has the needed clips/d-rings in case someone wants to help out and remix it!
