Overview

This project is a fully modular 3D printed tool box designed and explained step by step in a YouTube video series focused on mechanisms for 3D printing using Fusion 360.

The box is not just a static container. It includes multiple mechanical elements such as:

  • Hinges

  • A click-button closure

  • An articulated square mechanism

  • A second stacked level

The goal of this project is both practical use and learning mechanical design for FDM printing.

What’s included in this download

This Printables page includes both CAD and printable files, so you can either print the box directly or work on it inside Fusion 360.

Fusion 360 files (editable CAD):

  • Fusion file – Tool box (Video Part 1)

  • Fusion file – Tool box with articulated mechanism (Video Part 2)

These files allow you to:

  • Modify dimensions

  • Remove or add compartments

  • Adapt the design to your own tools

  • Study how the mechanisms are built

STL files (ready to print):

  • STL files – Tool box from Video Part 1

  • STL files – Tool box from Video Part 2

All STL files are prepared for direct FDM printing.

🟧 STL files – Tool box from Video Part 2

Description:
Ready-to-print STL files of the complete tool box from Video Part 2.
Designed to store the tools included with the Elegoo Centauri Carbon.
Import the STL into your slicer, separate into individual objects, auto-orient and print.

🟧 STL files – Tool box from Video Part 1

Description:
Ready-to-print STL files of the tool box from Video Part 1.
Includes the top box with lid, hinge and click-button closure.
Import into your slicer, separate the parts, auto-orient and print.

🟦 Fusion file – Tool box with articulated mechanism (Video Part 2)

Description:
Fusion 360 project file used in Video Part 2.
Intended for learning and practicing mechanical design, joints and articulated mechanisms.
Fully editable and parametric. This is a generic design, not optimized for specific printers.

🟦 Fusion file – Tool box (Video Part 1)

Description:
Fusion 360 project file used in Video Part 1.
Includes the top box, lid, hinge and click-button closure.
Fully parametric and editable for learning purposes.
Not tied to the Elegoo Centauri Carbon tool layout.

Tool organization

The internal compartments are designed to store the tools included with the Elegoo Centauri Carbon printer:

  • Allen keys

  • Phillips screwdriver

  • Flat screwdriver

The internal layout is modular and can be modified or removed if needed.

Mechanical design details

The complete design includes:

  • Top box with lid, hinge and click-button closure

  • Bottom box for additional storage

  • Articulated square mechanism to create a second level

  • Optimized holes and tolerances for 3D printing

  • Printed bushings that allow tightening screws without blocking movement

All mechanisms are designed specifically for FDM printing, without supports where possible.

Hardware required for full assembly

To assemble the complete box you will need:

  • 8 × M3 screws (8 mm length)

  • 8 × M3 heat-set inserts

The articulated mechanism uses printed bushings so the screws can be fully tightened while keeping the movement free.

Important note about the button mechanism

The click-button used to close the lid is provided as a separate model on Printables.
