Looking at all the other ammo boxes around I did not find anything I liked. Either they used square holes, limiting how much they held, or they were an odd size that didn't fit my ammo cans... So I just made my own.
I targeted the 3 types of ammo I cared about, 22LR, 9mm, and 223/556, and designed them to fit in my preferred ammo cans: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MU6ZAPG
They have a simple clip that holds the lid down, no annoying sliding thingy. They have easy to grip sides so they can come right out, even if they are at the bottom of the can. They stack together real well and even click together to hold fairly tightly.
Also, I added chamfers at the bottom of each hole so if you put a round in bullet up, it will stick out further, disallowing the lid to close and giving you more purchase to pull that slippery bugger out. (keep those chamfers in mind when remixing)
The 9mm and 223/556 boxes each hold 60 rounds. (2 mags worth of an AR, no more half empty cardboard boxes after a reload)
The 22LR boxes holds 160 rounds. (thats what fit... same form factor remember)
I used a 1mm paperclip as the hinge pin. it is a bit of a pain to get in there, but it's not coming out.
Here is an assembly video: https://youtu.be/2RMESwkM2uU
They all use the same lid, easy to print, but the lid has a couple overhangs, so I included one with supports for those that dont want to add their own... be sure to pop the supports out.
Also included Empty boxes, these have a single large cavity inside, good for storing small tools or whatever you like.
FWIW, using just these boxes;
I can get 1600 22LR in a can, which is 200 MORE than the 14 CCI boxes (although CCI boxes are nice and not what I was replacing) but a little less than the 2200 I can fit with stacked cardboard.
480 9mm which is a bit less than the 600 I normally get in stacked cardboard.
only 240 rounds of 223/556 which is a real bummer because I can get 400 with stacked cardboard... so I probably won't fill all my 223/556 cans with these... probably just the one can as 60 rounds is nicer than carrying 3 cardboard boxes. You can fit a couple 20 round cardboard boxes under the cases, so total capacity isn't as bad, but still not the best.
Also, they fit very similarly in the standard 50cal metal ammo cans, but your mileage may vary if you have different brands or size of can.
Have fun remixing it to fit all the other ammo types I don't care about.
