Info

this is small box  for Laskakit esp32 bundled with e-ink (https://www.laskakit.cz/laskakit-espink-shelf-213-esp32-e-paper/). It reads data from MQTT (structured as form-data) and displays first 4 parsed key-value pairs. First value is considered a title. It pulls the MQTT topic once a minute and therefore can run on battery for about one month (tested with 2500mA battery).

Motivation

I use it to integrate with my openprinttag reader/writer to show currently loaded filament. The flow is implemented in following manner;

  1. User reads openprinttag using the reader below

  2. if reading successful then certain data (material name, manufacturer, type and color) are published on internal mqtt topic (runs on the reader).

  3. This Laskakit module pulls every minute the mqtt and displays latest data if they differ.

This implementation works out of box - there are callbacks implemented to publish the data from the reader and an arduino unit is implemented for this esp32 module.

Print Materials and Print tips

  • I love Prusament rPLA Algae so the battery cover is from it otherwise any PLA of your choise works well. I didnt test any other filament types.

  • no supports needed and no special settings for the print were used.

Assembly steps

  1. download the source from this repository and directory: https://github.com/karelWeingart/openprinttag-pn5180-rpi/tree/main/ino/mqtt-display

  2. edit these values in mqtt-display.ino file (best in Arduino IDE or vscode) to be able to connect to the wifi and also MQTT Broker. Keep in mind that your Broker should have static address if you use IP for connection:

  3. // Network/MQTT setup

    const char* ssid="your wifi ssid";

    const char* password="your wifi passwd";

    const char* mqttServer = "mqtt server url";

    const int mqttPort = 1883; // Change this if needed

    const char* mqttTopic = "rfid/tag"; // Change this if different topic used.

  4. Connect the laskakit module to PC using usb cable and upload the sketch from Arduino IDE.

  5. The 3D printed box assembly is simple and no glue or anything special is needed
