Video! Everything prints flat - no supports needed!

SAFTEY NOTE: Wear at your own risk - the polycarb is used to block UV. Without it, polarizer-only glasses can be dangerous, as they block visible light, so your pupils dilate, but then are damaged by the invisible UV rays. As I understand it, even 0.5mm of polycarb should block most UV light - but I'm not a bioengeneer, so I could be wrong here. No lifeguards in this pool - beware.

Hardware required: 6x 6mm m2 screws A sheet of polycarb (or other UV blocking plastic) A sheet of polarizing film

Use the lens cutting template to cut: 2x polycarb circles 4x polarizer circles The cuts do not need to be super clean - I just used normal scissors and the cuts were very rough - the thick frames are designed to hide the rough cuts.

I'll add an assembly PDF when I can, but essentially it is built one layer at a time, front-to-back:

  1. frame front
  2. 2 polycarb circles (stays 'static')
  3. 2 polarizer circles (stays 'static)
  4. 2 rotators (rotates)
  5. 2 polarizer circles (rotates)
  6. 2 lens holders (rotates)
  7. 2 frame backs
  8. 2 nose pads - held in with screws, closes up the whole frame assembly rotate the nose pads to fit your face. Can 'swap-sides and flip them upside-down' so the glasses higher/lower on the nose
  9. 2 hinges (attach to frames) - also held in with screws, also holds in the whole frame assembly
  10. 2 arms (attach to hinges) - held in with screws - tighten/loosen to set friction

Can use a touch of superglue to hold things in place - but be careful to dry in a ventilated area, as superglue can deposit a while film as it dries.

Some notes about deficiencies compared to 'real' sunglasses:

  • These will not have an anti-glare coating, so you will likely often notice a mirroring and glare can be painful
  • Also most 'real' sunglasses have a bow to reduce glare, whereas these 'lenses' are flat

I've got a pivot-arm and gear-based variant WIPs in the onshape if anyone is curious - but frankly, I use them as pretty binary, so it may be more effort than it is worth. But maybe you think it looks cooler.
