Attached for your printing pleasure - a palm roller.  Palm rollers provide sensory stimulation and can be used as a focus aid for folks with ADHD.

This palm rollers is different from others in that the bearing is in the end cap, not in the roller.  This allows for a print in place (pip) bearing and an easy print! The bearing prints separately and screws into the roller.  This allows you to mix, match, change and experiment.

Many variations have been already created:

  • two sizes:  regular-75mm and mini-30mm

  • rollers hollow and solid

  • several textures: spiral, coil, knurled and lined

I have also created a fusion file with the rollers and a sketch plane with the roller projected onto it.  This should make it easy for you to create your own textures.  Try it out, I would love to see what you come up with!

How to Print:

Endcap with bearing: bearing is a print in place plastic bearing.  I have the bearing with 3 tolerance levels - .15/.20/.30 - choose the lowest tolerance that works for your printer.   Print the bearing so the flat part is to the build plate. Setting I used:

  • no brim

  • no supports

  • .15 layer

  • infill 100%

  • infill pattern Concentric

  • randomize seam position

When printing is complete, if the threaded insert does not spin - gently grab the rim below the threads with needle nose pliers and turn.  if it does not break free then try a larger tolerance. Bearing will loosen with use - for best results use a drop of lube and give surprising results for a plastic bearing.

Print Rollers

Rollers will be printed with the end flat on the build plate and will print straight up.  On my CoreOne there can be motion as the head swings around.  I use a fairly wide brim of 8mm on the outside only to stabilize the print.  Otherwise a straight forward print at either size.  My settings:

  • brin - add width

  • no supports

  • .15mm layer for knurled / .20mm layer for other rollers

  • infill at 15% - 100% depending on the desired results.

Customize your own roller

To create a custom roller, use the f360 file rollers_75_and_30.f3d  This is a native f360 file with a short timeline and base rollers on which you can put custom textures.  As the timeline shows, this file is basic with:

  • the first two entries inserting the two sized rollers; 75mm and 30mm

  • the 30mm roller is moved off the origin

  • a construction plane is created to contain the roller's sketch

  • a sketch with the roller projected onto it to build texture on

  • the last two use an extrude to create a solid roller.  If you do not desire a solid roller then suppress
