Shelf/riser is available in two designs with several different heights. The design is based around 15x8mm wood strips cut to the appropriate lengths using similar techniques and tools to the coaster build.

Bill of materials

  • 2 (or more) leg components, 2 legs works great for weight of books with span of 30 centimeters. Add more leg components to create structure that can bear more weight

  • 7x wood strips 15x8mm cut to the needed length

  • set of printed shims (optional, only needed if wood strips are dimensioned poorly)

  • wood lacquer, oil or other treatment (optional)

  • wood glue (optional)

Tools needed

  • splitting saw

  • chamfering tools (these by Per-form-3d worked great for this project)

  • 90° wood cutting guide (this one by TideChanger worked great for this project)

  • sanding paper

Wood strips of this size are sold NOT dimensionally stable or straight. Take care to pick pieces carefully. Dimensions can be corrected a bit by using shims or sandpaper.

Build instructions

  • Print leg components.

Two design variants, each in a different heights, are available. Feel free to print in high layer heights, 0.28 or a Draft mode worked well.

  • Cut wood to desired length.

Since the strips come in 0.95m length, 31cm cuts seemed to work well even in slightly bigger bookshelf (like Kalax where you would ideally use 33cm pieces). You will need 7 pieces per shelf.

  • Use chamfering tools to chamfer wood strips on all sides.

Observe the grain of the wood strips carefully and chamfer pieces in that direction to avoid tear-out and chamfering tool digging into the wood. Chamfer the pieces to 1 mm.

  • Treat the wood if desired.

Wood can be stained, sended, stained again and oiled, but shelfs in the pictures are left untreated.

  • Assemble shelf by laying one leg on the table, inserting all of the deck pieces in and slide second leg from the top.

If the wood strip fit is too loose, slide a shim together with wood piece into the leg piece. Wood strips that are too tight can be sanded lightly. Depending on expected weight and length of the wood strips, you can slight and distribute more leg components long the length of the riser.

Optionally, glue the wood pieces in place for added strength.

Alternatively, you can use printed pieces available in files for printing use bigger layer heights (0.28) and print pieces on shorted side. Add additional walls to increase part strength.
