I know what you’re thinking… why on earth is it square?

Simple — I wanted filament spools that behave themselves. No rolling off shelves, no playing dominoes in the middle of the night, no chasing runaway rolls across the shop. The square profile lets these stack cleanly on any shelf or workstation while still being fully usable on most standard spool holders and printer setups. Practical, predictable, and just a little bit rebellious.

While I was at it, I figured this was the perfect opportunity to build in some organization features that actually make life easier in a busy print shop.

My favorite feature by far is the sliding dust cover. It can be opened or closed with one hand without disturbing the filament path — which means less handling, less contamination, and fewer “who touched this roll?” moments. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference during real-world use.

I also designed integrated pockets for NFC tags for anyone running automated inventory systems like Spoolman. On the opposite side, there’s a dedicated slot for a printed filament identifier and level indicator, so you can instantly see what material you’re working with and how much is left without guessing or digging through software.

The goal wasn’t just to make a spool — it was to make a smarter, more organized, shop-friendly filament system that actually works the way makers do.
