This is a part / component intended to be incorporated into larger projects.

The basic mechanism is print-in-place, but to remove backlash/wiggle, it's recommended to print and slide in a tension plate

To use it, pinch the two side plates to release the spring-locked gears, move to a new angle while pinching, and release to mesh and lock the gears again.

Design Goals:

  • easy and reliable to print, print-in-place

  • requires no hardware

  • easy to use with one hand

  • spring-locked to make slipping impossible (unless you break it)

Settings:

  • PETG is largely untested, so rigid and low-shrinkage materials like PLA are recommended

  • 5 perimeters are recommeded, because this is a small object. The weak point is likely the crossbars connecting the outer frame to the gear axel

  • Due to complexity of the gear/spring mechanism, you may want to avoid speedy printing modes / large layer height

Remixing:

Do whatever you want with it, just link to here or my profile.

The gears were generated in Python using the cadquery package, the code for which is not provided here, but STEP files and a FreeCAD file is provided for easy remixing.

I may add a larger version later, let me know if that would be useful for you.
