After one of the legs of m Pygtech tripod snapped off I used 3D scanner to create a model of a replacement leg.

At the bottom of the leg I created holes for magnets (see the picture), since the original leg has it and it helps legs snap together when closed.

FILES

I've uploaded three files:

  • 2026-04-22-pygtech-selfie-tripod-original.stl -the original scan output with no modification

  • 2026-04-22-pygtech-selfie-tripod-fixed-edge+magnets.stl - a version modified to be printed on one side

  • 2026-04-22-pygtech-selfie-tripod.3mf - use this to import the model directly to slicer

HOW TO PRINT IT

Since the hinge is the most stressed part of the leg, we need to take care that layer adhesion can't affect the part's strength. To do so we need to place the part flat on the heat bead with hinge being horizontal. That will ensure maximum strength of that part.

I've tested thee orientations, where each has it's pros and cons:

  • grip side up - the mating surfaces (were legs touch when folded) don't turn out so well ⛔

  • grip side down - the grip will have many support blemishes ⛔

  • at 60° angle with one of it's flat sides planted on the heat bead - this one turned out best ✅

I printed the using black Prusament PETG.

FITTING THE PRINTED PART

I did only the basic fixes of the 3D model and didn't spend too much time tweaking it for a perfect fit.

So part requires some fitting after printing - the hinge part is a bit too wide.  Just scrape the excess off with a scalpel until it fits.

Since I solved my problem (tripod was repaired) I had little motivation to improve the model further.

ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT

There two ways a model could be improved:

  • the hinge could be tweaked it fits perfectly

  • the mating surface notch and protruding could be modeled manually so that the legs better grip onto each other when they are folded
