I have designed a professional-grade industrial/scientific outdoor enclosure, optimized for 3D printing (FDM/FFF) and rapid prototyping. The name in the script, “SENSE-BOX v1,” suggests that it is a monitoring station or an IoT sensor node intended for harsh outdoor environments.

The code leverages the advanced BOSL2 library, ensuring smooth transitions, clean geometries, and avoiding the classic aesthetic flaws of basic OpenSCAD models.

Here is a detailed breakdown of what I built and its key parameters:

1. Enclosure Architecture and Components

The system consists of 6 interconnected main elements:

The Main Body (Box Body): A sturdy base with walls reinforced by both longitudinal and transverse external ribs. This prevents structural deformation and distributes mechanical loads.

The Lid: Designed with a lip profile that fits perfectly with the base. It incorporates a directly molded knuckle hinge and supports for a snap-lock closure.

The Solar Shield: A true “ventilated roof” or Stevenson screen positioned above the lid. It serves to protect the box from direct sunlight, mitigating internal overheating caused by the greenhouse effect.

The Closure and Sealing System: An animated latch and a geometric groove around the perimeter for a flexible gasket (printable in TPU), designed to provide water and dust resistance.

The Internal Plate: A removable LimeGreen plate raised off the bottom. It allows you to screw in electronics (e.g., Arduino, ESP32, custom boards) without having to drill holes in the bottom of the box, keeping the waterproofing intact.

The Pole Bracket: A “generative” lower mounting system with a V-shaped cradle, ideal for securing the box to a pole or round pipe using cable ties or bolts.

2. Integrated Auxiliary Systems

Rain-Resistant Climate Ventilation: Side slats angled at 60°. They allow air to pass through so the sensors (e.g., temperature/humidity) can “breathe” but prevent heavy rain from entering. Behind the grille, there is a 0.5 mm deep recess designed to accommodate a metal mesh or water-repellent fabric (e.g., Gore-Tex type).

RF Provision (Antenna): A cylindrical hole on the short side with an internal hexagonal flare, precisely engineered to accommodate an SMA/RP-SMA panel connector for Wi-Fi, LoRa, or GPS antennas.

Green Power: The roof is shaped to accommodate an array of solar panels (configurable in X and Y), recessed into the sunshade to recharge the internal batteries.

3. Fundamental and Modifiable Parameters

The script’s greatest strength is its full parameterization via the OpenSCAD Customizer. The key values that govern the model are:

Dimensions and Thicknesses

Box_Length (150mm), Box_Width (90mm), Box_Height (30mm): Define the internal usable volume.

Wall_Thickness (3mm): The structural thickness of the walls, ideal for ensuring strength while maintaining acceptable print times.

Corner_Rounding (6mm): The radius of curvature of the corners. Crucial in 3D printing to reduce thermal stresses (prevents corners from lifting off the bed—warping).

Energy and Mechanical Management

Panel_Count_X (2) and Panel_Count_Y (1): Control how many solar panels to include. The script automatically calculates if the panels exceed the roof dimensions (is_out_of_bounds).

Pole_Diam (25mm) and Bracket_V_Angle (120°): Adjust the lower bracket to the diameter of the target pole.

Shield_Gap (10mm): The air gap between the cover and the solar shield that ensures thermal insulation.

Fasteners and Tolerances

M3_Boss_Inner_Diam (2.8mm): The perfect diameter to ensure that M3 self-tapping screws grip directly into the plastic, or to accommodate heat-set brass inserts.

gasket_tolerance (0.2mm) and Panel_Tolerance (0.4mm): The mechanical “clearances” necessary for the printed parts to fit into their respective seats without destructive force.

Added improvment still on work. rev Holder_box_v1.47_tilt and Holder_box_v2.01_tilt Usable but not testd or printed.

If You prefer, You can us a ball joint to make tilted solar shield. PC is better than PETG or ASA for this kind of device. https://www.printables.com/model/1722144-ball-joint

In addition to the customizable integrated mounting, there is a second pole mounting option that can only be used for box sizes from 150*90 and above and comes with an excellent, albeit bulky, support that is securely locked with cable ties and comes directly from: https://www.printables.com/model/1233994-meshtasitc-solar-node-mount

With release 1.51, I introduced the ability to create an extension that can be glued to the lid if you need more depth, for example, for a hardware overhaul. The Openscad code also includes a section that can be used as a functional extension with two gaskets, but only if the height of the extension is greater than 30 mm, otherwise the latches will interfere with each other.
