3D Printed Solar Cooker Holder – Free STL Download and Egg Cooking Test

No more spilling during loading and unloading your foodtray

Loading and unloading a solar cooker can sometimes be awkward, especially when the food tray needs to be held with one hand while adding or removing food. To solve this problem, I designed and 3D printed a simple solar cooker holder that keeps the food tray stable and upright, leaving both hands free.

The holder consists of two printed supports connected with M8 threaded rod and nuts. Four custom insert pieces fit perfectly into the supports and provide solid contact points for the threaded rod assembly. The result is a lightweight but sturdy stand that can be assembled in just a few minutes.

Why I Designed This Solar Cooker Holder

When using a solar cooker outdoors, stability is important. The food tray can become hot and difficult to handle, especially when preparing meals at a campsite or campervan location. This holder keeps the tray secure while food is being loaded or removed.

Benefits include:

  • Hands-free loading and unloading

  • Improved stability of the food tray

  • Simple assembly using common hardware

  • Easy to 3D print at home

  • Lightweight and portable for camping and vanlife

Assembly of the solar cooker holder

The holder is assembled using:

  • 2 printed supports

  • 4 insert pieces

  • M8 threaded rod

  • M8 nuts

The insert pieces slide into the supports and create strong mounting points for the threaded rod. Once the nuts are tightened, the assembly becomes rigid and ready for use. Watch the video and it will prove it is easy enough.

Filament used

Because the food tray can become very hot during solar cooking, I used a heat-resistant filament (Ngen HT) rated for temperatures up to 100°C-212F

Solar Cooking Test: Hard-Boiled Eggs

To test the holder, I cooked two eggs in my solar cooker without adding water.

The eggs were placed in the food tray, inserted into the solar cooker, and left to cook in direct sunlight. After 26 minutes, the eggs were fully hard-boiled. Cooling them with water stopped the cooking process, and the finished result showed perfectly cooked eggs.

This simple test demonstrates both the effectiveness of solar cooking and the practicality of the new holder design.

The STL files for the supports and insert pieces are available as a free download.

Download the files, print the parts, add M8 threaded rod and nuts, and build your own solar cooker holder for your next outdoor cooking adventure.

Happy solar cooking!
