I needed a cruise ship model as part of a wedding gift but was not able to find a good one, so I made my own. Because not all of you need boat decorations for newly-weds, I also provide a plain version of the model without any text or hearts.

The ship is roughly 13 cm (5") long, but scales up and down to your liking. So far, I have printed it in 1x and 2x scale and am happy with both results - see the images. I used the 2x ship for the present, which should give you some sense of scale. Just be aware that the model contains two (angled) holes on the top decks for toothpicks or other small sticks that allow you to put up a pennant garland for a more festive decoration. They are 2 mm in diameter for the base scale and will scale up and down accordingly. Likewise, the hull contains an anchor opening of 3 mm diameter in the front and an attachment hook of 4 mm diameter in the back. Together with another mounting strut in the front this should give you enough possibilities to attach strings or other objects.

I also provide a display stand that (hopefully) resembles ocean waves and that should fit the ship. Please note that I never printed the display stand myself, so I don't really know if it's fit for purpose or even looks decently. I probably should have added some pegs on the stand and some holes in the ship, but I'll leave that to you as an exercise ;)

If you print the ship and especially the parts I did not print myself, I'd be happy if you'd share pictures of your results!

Print tips

  • No print tips necessary I'd say - this should be an easy print.

  • PLA works fine or any other of your favorite material.

  • Prints without supports.

  • Scale it up and down according to your needs, just pay attention to the hole diameters if you intend to use them for mounting stuff.

  • If you want a quick print at the expense of some detail use a layer height of 0.3 mm instead of 0.2 mm (just as I did for the prints in my photos).

Design goals

  • look like a cruise ship without necessarily being realistic

  • print without supports

  • simple design because I did not want to iterate endlessly

  • easily scalable because I did not know the final size yet when I started

  • attachments in front and back for adding more decoration
