As a car guy, I wanted to push my modeling skills by making this inline-3 that works with a hand crank.

This inline-3 has extremely tight tolerances, so some sanding might be necessary for a good build. The assembly is realitivily straight foreward. I added some tricks to make it run better. After printing, if you noticed that the engine block is different than mine, the one I'm using was a prototype with shorter cylinders to test, but the STL works much better than the prototype, so all will be good. To print the engine block need supports to print. They are also still easy to remove despite the enclosed compartment with one entry point.

Written Assembly Tricks

  • Put the piston assembly together first, and when the crankshaft arm is down, lower the piston in from the top.

  • Before putting the pistons in, attach the end cap.

  • Make two c-clips and put them on the long side of the crankshaft on opposite sides of the end cap with some wiggle room.
