Intended usage

When prototyping with modules I find it hard to have a good way to mount them. That is where this comes into play.

You need three categories of parts:

  • Grid: The grid that everything mounts to

  • PCB Backboard: The mount for each different type of PCB

  • Glue Hook: Orientation makes these unprintable with the Backboard. Glue these in the corners of the backboard.

The idea is to build your project with re-usable organizing.

  1. Print a grid of a good size for the project and glue it to the surface.

  2. Mount all modules on either screw based holders or use the glue standoffs with double sided tape or glue.

  3. Add glue hooks to the holders

  4. Put everything in place and do your cable management

  5. Once all modules are in a good place either leave it as is or fixate everything by gluing the mounts to the grid (CA glue or glue gun or something else).

If this is used beyond experiments, make sure you follow all rules regarding materials etc.

Printing

As of the launch, I print everything in PLA. Nothing fancy. If your application is experiencing heat or so, adjust your materials accordingly. 0.2 mm layer height and noting fancy. The strength is in the inaccuracies and flex of the material. This is not for heavy equipment. If you are building a computer chassis, use openGrid instead and maybe put Packboard on certain places for cable management or such.

Standard

Description of the standard.

Backboard

The back board is made up of a grid with the following profile:

The squares are symmetric in all directions.

The 7 mm divisions makes it size compatible with openGrid (C-C 28 mm) and Gridfinity (C-C 42 mm).

Mounting hooks

Suggested mounting hooks have the following profile for spanning 3 holes:

18 mm = 3*7 - (7-4)/2 * 2

The thickness of the extrusion is 3.5 mm, which gives plenty of tolerance but may cause some wobble before fixating.
