English

This project consists of small fireflies designed for printing. It only has two printed parts: a black body and a partially translucent abdomen.

Each firefly is illuminated from within by a single 3mm green LED. It also includes a loop for attaching a cable tie.

The model was originally designed as part of an Arduino-controlled garden lighting installation, but it can also be used as a simple decorative LED ornament in many other projects.

Once the two parts are printed, simply slide the abdomen onto the body, leaving the LED in the middle, and guide the wire through the designated hole. You may need to reinforce the joint with glue, but friction should be sufficient. It might also be a good idea to fill the LED channel with epoxy resin if the firefly will be installed outdoors.

Printing Instructions

It is designed to be printed without supports and in a suitable material, such as PETG (in my case), or ASA.

The abdomen necessarily requires a color change, approximately halfway up. Translucent green works well for a firefly. I didn't venture into more outlandish colors, but it could look good. In addition to the color change, it may be necessary to print the abdomen on a raft, as it's a very thin piece and tends to detach from the print bed.

Program

I've also included a small Arduino program that simulates the behavior of a real firefly in two different ways. Using the controller's PWM pins, it simulates a very realistic firefly, with rapid blinking and variable brightness. Using the other GPIO pins without PWM, it produces a much simpler firefly that remains lit most of the time and blinks every few seconds.

A gif is included showing what the fireflies controlled with the program look like.
