You've found the perfect Gridfinity object, but it needs magnet slots? No problem. Add this negative volume. Done.

Features

  • Standard 6 × 2 mm magnets: compatible with the popular cylindrical size

  • No print pauses: print the whole object in one go

  • No glue: magnets snap securely into place

  • Secure horizontal retention: more reliable than vertical press-fit slots

  • Compliant-mechanism design: flexible features hold the magnet in place

  • Maximum magnetic strength: only 0.1 mm between magnet and target

  • Removable magnets: simply push them back out

  • Gridfinity-compliant: follows the standard magnet position

  • No CAD required: add the negative volume directly in your slicer

  • Works with STL, 3MF, STEP and more: anything your slicer can handle

  • Fully modular: add slots only where you actually need them

  • Optional shell included: for compatibility with skeletonized / shelled bins

  • Support-free printing: optimised for clean bridging

  • Based: Compatible with any Gridfinity base

How to

  1. Open your Gridfinity bin in your slicer, e.g. PrusaSlicer, BambuSlicer, OrcaSlicer.

  2. Set 1st layer height = 0.1mm

  3. Add a negative volume.

    1. In PrusaSlicer:

      1. (Switch to "Normal" or "Expert Mode").

      2. Right-click the bin on the build plate.

      3. Select Add negative volume > Load... > MaG [v1.00] ][1x1] negative volume.stl

      4. Ensure the negative volume sits on the build plate (Z position = 1.15) and has the same X/Y coordinates as your bin.

    2. In other slicers: [info pending, for Bambu Slicer see https://wiki.bambulab.com/en/software/bambu-studio/subtract-a-part]

  4. Slice to see the result. Negative volumes may not appear to do anything until the model is sliced.

Q&A

  • Q: "What if I don't want that many magnet slots?" A: Delete the ones you do not need.

    • In PrusaSlicer:

      • In the object list, right-click "MaG [v1.00] ][1x1] negative volume.stl"

      • Split

      • Select a negative volume that you do not need

      • Right-click > Delete

  • Q: "How can I better see which negative volume I've selected?" A: I wish PrusaSlicer handled this better. My workaround:

    • Select the bin only. Note its Z position. Add 10mm.

    • Move it upwards off the build plate until you see the negative volumes on the buildplate.

    • Delete the ones you do not need.

    • Move the bin back to the build plate: deduct 10mm from its Z position.

  • Q: "What if I have a skeletized / shelled bin and the negative volume just cuts a hole into its thin floor?" A: Add the optional shell.

    • In PrusaSlicer:

      • Right-click the bin on the build plate.

      • Select Add part > Load... > MaG [v1.00] ][1x1] optional shell.stl

      • Ensure the optional shell sits on the build plate (Z position = 1.35) and has the same X/Y coordinates as your bin.

      • In other slicers: [info pending]

    • In other Slicers: [info pending]

  • Q: "Why is there is no base layer to hold the magnet?" A: You have to set the 1st layer height to 0.1mm.

  • Q: "Can I remix this?" A: Sure. Respect the licence and have at the Fusion* and STEP files. (*It's a complete mess. Please don't judge me.)

Caveats

  • 1st layer height must be 0.1mm

  • in rare cases, the magnet cutout may interfere with space the model creator had originally reserved for other objects

Upgrade anything

Finally add the missing magnets to your (okay, my) favourite Gridfinity models, e.g.:

Upgrade models with existing holes (you can fill in the "old" magnet holes with Add Part: Box):

Comparison to other models / tools

  • no additional software required

  • works offline, in your slicer

  • push-out slot hidden under object

Projects I consulted before starting this — you may prefer these. No hard feelings.

  • Gridfinity bins, side plugged magnet by @Jboe. (Push-out slot visible on the side, creates artifacts. Limited compliance holding the magnet. No fillet on side opening.)

  • Gridfinity Refined by Perplexing Labs. (The Gridfinity Refined magnet side slot has no compliant mechanism holding the magnet in place, and the distance between the magnet and the surface underneath is 4x thicker than my approach. No filled on side opening.)

  • Gridfinity Rebase. [Note to self / to-do: upload a pre-cut base module.] (This app could use my work to convert models, if for some reason you do not wish to use the slicer-based approach. Only works with STL files.)
