This pretty cool fidget shows how a turning gear can be made with straight paths!

Inspiration

It is inspired on No.: 027 "Multiple Gearing" from the 507 mechanical movements book.

A nice educational animation (not made by myself) of the movement can be seen here:

Printing

Printing is straightforward. Except for the "holder_part1"  that needs 5 perimeters to be fully solid, this will make the pins stronger. Also, if you increase the infill of the disk you can give it a bit more weight and make it turn better.

Material: PLA

  • Layer height: 0.15 mm

  • Infill: 30% (but you can go higher for extra weight)

  • Supports: Not required

Assembly

For the assembly, make sure the 3 pins are not centred on the disk, they need to be near an edge. Also, there are two option for the holder part 2, one might require glue or a strong force to insert (depending on your material), if it doesn't work for you try the self compliant version.
