As seen on X and YouTube:

Designed for use with a pair of the Tectonic BMR80C-8 full range drivers or a pair of the Dayton Audio PC83-8 full range drivers, depending on availability.  Usable overall bandwidth of 55Hz - 20kHz in the nearfield.

The Tectonic BMR80C-8 is the primary driver choice for this design and is suitable for playing at high volume.  The Dayton Audio is the alternate driver choice and is suitable for playing at low-to-medium volume sounding nearly identical.  (At high volume, the PC83 version is prone to distortion.)

Warning:  These speakers should not be used next to an authentic CRT monitor as they are not magnetically shielded.

Disclaimer:  This is an acoustic model.  As such, it does not scale, nor is it compatible with drivers other than the ones specified.  Scaling / incorrect driver(s) will result in significantly diminished performance.

Assembly notes:

Wiring / DSP / amplification:

  • Retro is an isobaric speaker.  Each enclosure requires a pair of the Tectonic BMR80C-8 drivers, or a pair of the Dayton Audio PC83-8 drivers.  The two 8 ohm drivers are wired in parallel; positive-to-positive, negative-to-negative, creating a 4 ohm ISO group.

  • The Tectonic BMR80C-8 version of this design can be paired with a 100W per channel amplifier.

  • The Dayton Audio PC83-8 version of this design can be paired with a 50W per channel amplifier.

  • No DSP required; start with the bass & treble knobs set flat (noon position) and adjust to taste.

  • If DSP is available, apply a 55Hz high pass filter to protect the drivers.
