At first glance, the Levitating Ring Table looks like it shouldn't be standing. The top disc hovers above the base with no rigid connection between them — no glued leg, no screw, nothing touching all the way down. That's not a rendering trick: it's a real tensegrity structure. The printed pieces are all in compression and never touch each other; the only thing holding the whole table together and upright is a network of fishing line under tension, threaded through the printed parts. Push down gently on the top and it gives, bounces, and settles back — proof there's really nothing solid holding it up.
The second trick is hiding in plain sight in the middle of the structure. The compression struts aren't straight legs — they're bent into two interlocking loops, echoing the classic Linking Rings trick magicians have performed for centuries: solid rings that appear impossibly joined together. Here, the "impossible link" isn't sleight of hand, it's the tensegrity principle itself — the rings never actually touch, held apart and in place purely by line tension you can barely see.
That's the spirit of this build: it invites you to poke it, press on it, peer through the gaps, and ask "how is this staying up?" — and the answer is a genuinely satisfying bit of physics (compression vs. tension) rather than a hidden mechanism. It's a small, sturdy desk piece sized to hold trinkets or figurines on display, so the "magic" earns its keep on your desk every day.
Size: 4" diameter × 3.5" tall — small enough for a desk, sturdy enough to actually use.
I added an easier to print version that needs less support material. you can print all 3 parts and then glue the the top and half ring together before you use your fishing wire to tie up your table.
