This is a tool to assist in lapping (or polishing) ball diff rings for RC cars.

The idea is to mount the diff ring on the gear, and use that gear in the base plate to move the diff ring around on the grinding surface.

I made for gears for the diffs that I use. These are commonly found in Pan Cars:

  • Feniks/Tamiya TRF (2 flat sides)

  • D-ring Roche, CRC (1 flat side)

  • Tamiya F1/Group C (octagon)

  • Xbility 1:28 (hex)

Needed for use:

  • A flat, smooth and stiff surface, like a smooth glass cutting board

  • Sandpaper or polishing compound. I use 240, 400 and 800 grit

Needed to put together:

  • 1x 688 (8x16x5)

  • 2x 4x2 neodynium magnets per gear (optional)

  • glue (optional)

Assembly instructions. Steps marked might require a small drop of glue. This will depend on material and

  • Mount magnets in gear. Use the magnet tool to push them in. These are fragile.*

  • Mount axle in gear, on the flat side of the gear.*

  • Mount ring on axle.*

  • Put bearing in knob.*

  • The axle should fit the bearing the the knob loose enough that the bearing remains inside the knob. You might want to sand down the bearing a bit for proper fit.

I printed this in PETG, but most materials can be used. You might want to experiment with ironing, but it shouldn't really be needed.
