LED Throwie Base
This is a simple LED Throwie Base I designed for a children's workshop at Studio UMZU.
The idea is to use this base as the foundation for a custom light-up creation. Participants can build their own housing around it using a 3D pen, while the base keeps the LED, coin cell battery, and magnet in place.
Bill of Materials
1× 10 mm round magnet (I use a 10 × 2 mm magnet, but other thicknesses should work too)
1× standard 3 V LED (the housing accommodates 5 mm, 8 mm, and 10 mm LEDs)
1× CR2032 coin cell battery
3D-printed base (PLA recommended)
Design Notes
The base is designed to print well in PLA and provides a flat foundation for building your own enclosure.
Its octagonal shape makes it a good fit for square housings, while also leaving plenty of room for other shapes and designs.
There is a small slit for inserting a piece of paper or thin plastic. This acts as a simple on/off switch by interrupting the electrical contact.
Compatible with Different 3D Pens
The base works with both PCL and PLA 3D pens, making it especially suitable for workshops with younger children. PCL pens typically operate at lower temperatures than PLA pens, making them a good option for working with smaller children under appropriate supervision.
Both materials can be used to build a custom housing around the base, leaving plenty of room for creativity and experimentation.
What Is a Throwie?
The name LED Throwie comes from the original idea: combine an LED, a coin cell battery, and a magnet to create a small, glowing object that sticks to magnetic surfaces.
With this base, you can take that idea a step further and turn it into your own little creation. Build a custom housing, switch on the light, and stick it to a magnetic surface to spread some joy!
