Version 2 of my minimalist ashtray features a ribbed exterior, an improved recessed lid and a design made for support-free printing.
The lid sits inside the upper rim instead of resting on top, helping reduce the chance of wind getting underneath it. A central knob makes it easy to remove. The lid is a loose fit, without a snap lock or thread.
Features:
• 48 subtle vertical ribs for a clean look and comfortable grip.
• Recessed lid with an 8 mm insertion depth.
• Lid surface sits 1 mm below the upper rim.
• Smooth interior with an integrated central post.
• Two separate parts — no glue or additional hardware needed.
• Body and lid arranged on separate plates in the 3MF project.
• Both parts designed to print without supports.
Dimensions:
• Body: Ø113.4 × 65 mm.
• Lid, including knob: Ø106.1 × 26.6 mm.
• Total assembled height: 83.6 mm.
• Lid clearance: 0.35 mm per side.
Suggested print settings:
• Nozzle: 0.4 mm.
• Layer height: 0.16–0.20 mm.
• Walls: 4.
• Infill: 15–20% gyroid.
• Top/bottom layers: 5.
• Supports: disabled.
• Print both parts flat, with the lid knob facing upward.
Material:
PETG is recommended for a durable prototype or outer housing. PLA is suitable for a display model or checking the fit. Select the correct filament profile before slicing.
Important: ordinary printed plastics, including PETG and PLA, must not contact burning cigarettes or hot ash directly. Functional ashtray use requires a suitable non-combustible insert that protects all exposed plastic, including the central post. An insert is not included.
The geometry has been digitally checked, but physical printing and wind resistance have not been tested. Fit may vary with filament and printer calibration.
