A configurable scent-work board with removable, screw-top canisters. Build a straight line, square, L-shape, U-shape or winding arrangement using interchangeable segments and connectors.

Single and double segments let you expand the layout without reprinting the whole board. Rounded corners change direction, end caps finish the exposed connectors, and optional pivot links allow adjustable layouts and side-by-side folding for storage.

Two sizes are included:

Version

Canister body

Holder opening

Bar width

Small

48 mm

50 mm

70 mm

Large

66 mm

69 mm

108 mm

Both holder sizes are 20 mm tall, with a 15 mm canister insertion depth. The supplied canisters have overlapping threaded lids with scent holes. Match the canister to its corresponding holder; the lids are not interchangeable between sizes.

Printing

I printed these at 0.24 mm layer height, using both PLA and PETG. Layer height is not particularly critical for the holder bars, although finer layers may improve the feel of the threaded parts.

Suggested starting settings:

  • Layer height: 0.20–0.24 mm.

  • Walls: 3–4; use 4 around the pivot joints.

  • Infill: approximately 15–25%.

  • Supports: designed to print without supports; inspect small bridges above hardware pockets.

  • Scale: 100%, using the supplied orientations.

Print holder bars flat, canister bodies base-down, and lids with their perforated outer face against the bed. Pivot links are supplied upside down for printing—keep that orientation.

PLA is sufficient for normal training use. PETG is an option for warmer conditions or longer outdoor sessions. Avoid leaving PLA parts in a hot car or prolonged direct sun.

Fit and finishing

The dovetail connections deliberately use snug tolerances to help keep the assembled board together. A well-calibrated printer and filament profile make a noticeable difference, especially when mixing materials or colours.

Small extrusion bulges around sharp corners, seams and first layers can make the joints tighter than intended. Light sanding or careful use of a deburring tool can help remove these high spots. Remove a little material at a time and check the fit frequently.

The dovetails assemble vertically, by lowering one into the other. Avoid forcing them together sideways.

Print the included connector, canister-fit and thread-test pieces before committing to a full set. Check that the lid holes are clear and remove any strings or rough edges from the threads.

Optional pivot links

Each pivot assembly requires two M3×16 socket-head screws and two standard plain M3 hex nuts.

The screw heads and nuts sit in recessed pockets. Tighten gently to adjust the friction without crushing the printed parts. Use the matching short or long link for the corresponding bar width.

Test the hardware fit and folding movement before printing multiple assemblies.

Training use

Use the canisters for scent recognition, indication practice and configurable container searches. These are training tools; competition search layouts and equipment requirements depend on the relevant organisation and class.

AI Assistance Disclosure

AI-assisted tools were used to generate and refine the 3D geometry based on my specifications and design decisions. All designs were developed through an iterative process involving physical printing, fit testing, and manual feedback.

The final models have been printed, tested, and validated for their intended use.
