Converting the Ultimaker2 clone to direct extrusion using a lightweight extruder was a long term project of mine.
So here it is: Only 250g total, well ballaced on the drive rods and only a small penalty in usable space.
The flange for the extruder will fit several types like the Orbiter or TBGS. The part cooling fans are interchangeable. Maybe bigger nozzles would be good or radial fans.
The skelton structure itself is 15g only. I printed it in ABS for the temperature resistance. 2 M3 inserts are necessary, the other screws tap directly into the plastic. The bores for the linear bearings (from the unmounted Ultimaker toolhead) should be reamed to 12mm or otherwise finished.
The left screw of the extruder can be exchanged to a piece of M3 threaded rod to give the cable harness a hold.
