04/13/2023 update:
- Added step file for anyone who wants to modify it for themselves (PLEASE UPLOAD REMIX)
- Added the “Holey Version” bucket with access holes pre-modeled for hard-mounting to frame. Edited instructions regarding this.
- Corrected some information/directions after reviewing my own installation
About:
Note: Please read “Assembly" steps to determine which “bucket” file you wish to use. I HIGHLY recommend the “holey” version and screwing into the frame
This two-part design utilizes a bucket and a “top” (bracket) to allow the mounting of four accessory rocker switches in a 08-11 Impreza or 08-14 WRX/STI. It utilizes two of the factory screws that hold the map light buttons in place to mount to the bezel itself, and is secured to the roof with the map light bezel plus optional screws of your choice into the frame.
The cable pass through is intentionally oversized and extra space is left internally to allow for various other uses for the bucket. I personally tapped into my hot supply for the switches and added a circuit to power my dash cam to save a cable run. One could potentially pop a tracker like an Airtag in there for additional vehicle security.
There is an additional pair of semi-optional screw holes in the top portion that are intended to be used to secure it to the upper windshield frame. If you don't use them your bracket may be floppy depending on weight. There are no pre-existing holes in the frame, ymmv, glhf
This bracket was designed around generic 22x38mm accessory switches. I used these ones specifically, however any of the same style should fit: https://a.co/d/546X4km
The Print:
- Material: I chose PETG, make sure it's heat and uv-resistant
- Settings used: 2 walls, 0.25mm layers, 20% fill
- Supports: Yes
- Top should be printed right-side-up, using supports under the ‘dome’
- The bucket is also designed be printed right-side-up, I had my best results using tree supports for the switch openings - Post-Pro: Minimal, switch openings and the bucket's assembly pins may need minor filing and the screw holes may need redrilled depending on tolerances. (I found them a bit on the tight side)
Assembly (READ BEFORE PRINTING):
- Unscrew map light from roof (two screws behind the lens) and disconnect the wires behind as you remove it. (this is a great time to get led bulbs if you haven't yet)
- Remove the headliner clip ahead of map light. (this could alternatively be used to secure to roof instead of the frame, would need to drill through ‘top’ portion, may edit in the future)
- Unscrew outer two screws from backside of the map-light bezel (the ones that hold the switch in place), put ‘top’ portion of the bracket on top, and replace the screws.
- Attach the bucket to the top by aligning the three pins and inserting four m3x10mm screws (two on top, two in the forward-face).
- NOTE: If you are mounting the bracket to the windshield frame, you should use the “Holey Version” of the bucket component as it has access holes on the bottom, otherwise you will lose access at this step without modifying the basic bucket.
- Insert your wiring through the pass through in the rear, connect your switches, and snap them in place.
- Remount the entire assembly (top, bottom, and bezel) back to the roof using the two original screws (and frame-mounting optionals if utilized) and replace the lens.
