This is a straightforward bracket to allow you to mount a piece of plywood, metal, plastic, foam-core poster board, or other flat stock material to make a shelf on your audio rack. You could use it to mount other things too, probably.
It isn't “1U” worth of space in your rack - it's actually less that 1U. The two mounting holes are spaced for an outer and center mounting points on a rack. You could install it on the “center and bottom” holes for 1U position, or flip it upside down and install it in the “center and top” holes.
If you want to do something goofy, you can probably mount it off the official 1U spaces in your rack if you only use one screw per bracket.
If you have free-standing racks like mine, you can mount the brackets pointing outwards to add a little extra shelf, as shown, or mount a shelf between two freestanding racks.
The Shelf
To attach your flat stock material shelf, you can use glue, screws, or just drill holes in the material aligned to the pattern on the bracket and insert ~5mm dowels as pins. The gap for the flat stock is 5mm. Foam-core poster board has a tight press fit and a dab of hotglue will hold it very well. The width of your shelf material should be about 428mm for a 19" rack, but racks are notoriously variable, so measure after you install the brackets or cut longer and trim down as needed
The holes are offset by 25mm and have an ID of 5mm.
The left and right brackets are not interchangeable, but they're pretty close.
The picture show foam-board I had on hand. It was just some random stuff I had laying around I cut down to size.
Printing Notes
I printed this on a Prusa Mini+ using Hatchbox Dark Gray Matte PLA using the 0.25mm DRAFT preset. For extra strength, add more perimeters in your slicer.
If you print it in the orientation shown, you should have less problems with layers splitting under heavy loads or the screws breaking out of the bracket.
