I kept seeing AWD mods for printers this week and couldn't resist the temptation to rebuild my printer for the 5th time. I used the VzBot Ender 5 mod on my printer and have been very happy with the results, but unfortunately, it does not have AWD. Looking at the VzBot files on GitHub, I found out that the motors would not be able to fit due to the 2040 extrusion on the Ender 5 preventing the front motors from mounting (ask me how I found out, lol).
Begrudgingly, fueled only by the temptation of speed, I designed new AWD plates for the front X and Y motors. Due to the 2040 extrusion, I could not fit the motors on the underside of the plates, so I had to design the plates to seat the motors on top, creating this “FrankenVz” of sorts. The only other change I made to the original mod is longer extrusions along my Y-axis (470mm) to make the entire build plate available to the printhead.
You won't need any extra hardware aside from a few screws to mount the motors and the wiring. The dowel pin holes are pretty tight, but if you drill them out and do some sanding, it is doable. I might fix this in the future. It works as you'd expect; just don't forget your motors are upside down in your config file.
