Warning: This adapter is just a design experiment. It is not advised to be used instead of the commercial one. The commercial adapters are supposed to undergo thorough testing to be safe to use.
Warning: Using this adapter implies dealing with mains voltage which is dangerous and can kill. The design is provided as-is. You should understand what you are doing.
Warning: Don't print it out of conductive filament.
Warning: Using this adapter poses risk of fire! Different plastics handle heat differently.
Don't do it. Just buy one :)
It uses stripped copper wires from a regular Ethernet twisted pair. Usually this wire has a diameter of 0.5mm which should handle 2A current. The design uses two wires per terminal so theoretically it can handle 4A but to be on a safe side it is better to use it with up to 2A or 400W loads.
Assembly is not easy. It requires manipulating wires with a pair of tweezers or needle nose pliers.
Print:
- 0.2mm layer size works just fine for me
- no supports, the design includes bridges where needed
- no brim
Assembly:
- To connect two sides a four 10mm pieces of filament is used as dowels
- The holes for filament and wires needs cleaning up with a drill. Use 1.8mm drill for filament holes and 1mm drill for wire holes
- Prepare four 25cm pieces of stripped wire
- Wind 3 turns of a wire around a printed bobbin. Secure one end in a hole with a pair of tweezers. Help winding loops with tweezers. It might be tricky. Take your time.
- Channel the wire in the groove and thread it in the hole. Support the poles with your finger, they can brake easily if too much fore is applied.
- Prepare two sides with four wires wound
- Connect two sides with filament dowels. You can use glue right now or later by spreading sides a bit.
- After connecting two sides you will have four ends of wires hanging. Two wires per terminal. Wind two wires together around a pole.
- Thread the remaining two wires into a hole and pull it with pliers. It can be tricky. If a hole is to tight you can widen it with a drill.
- Flush cut the remaining ends.
