I have a pair of Lunt Sunocular binos that I picked up for the upcoming total solar eclipse. They work well, but lack the tripod mount screw-hole. I created this model as a solution.
You will need:
- Some closed-cell foam, like from old packaging or a craft store. Aim for ¼-inch / 6 mm thick or so. You want some squishiness. Try to find foam that's not slippery.
- A ¼-20 threaded insert
- Some elastic cord
- A “spring clamp” for the cord - the cord is captured by a spring loaded mechanism that enables you to adjust tension on the cord.
I printed mine in PLA. Other filaments would be fine. I don't plan to leave it out and the sun exposure during use will be minimal. Go for a UV-stable filament if you will leave it out. I did 10% fill with 4 perimeters. It seems plenty strong with no flex.
Print the model. Using a soldering iron, heat then push the threaded insert into the hole. Glue the foam to the other side. Loop the cord as shown in my photos and insert the ends into the clamp. I tied my cord off so I wouldn't lose the clamp off the ends.
