This is a remix of @DrakoTrogdor_2747's very handy Ring Indoor Camera Weighted Mount. There is nothing wrong at all with the original model, but I saw this as a good opportunity to practice some design techniques I've recently picked up from other makers.

Changes

The main change I made was redesigning the threaded plug at the top. The first change was adding a brim to keep the plug from being able to fall inside the body of the mount. This change came about because I was in awe of the buttery smooth threads on the original model and I wasn't paying attention and dropped the plug into the model.

The second change to the plug was that I increased the size of the slot at the top of the plug so you can use a quarter or button battery to tighten it.

The third change to the plug wasn't really needed because the original design threads fit like a dream, but I made threads designed to reduce wear from friction between plastic parts. That's probably overkill for a model like this since you're not likely to be putting too many miles on the threads, but I saw it as a good opportunity to practice designing threads for plastic that don't wear easily.

I also made minor changes to the dimensions (mostly reducing the thickness of the bottom and the outer shell to reduce print time and material), and I added some champers and fillets here and there (both inside and out).

Printing

The included .bgcode files contains the following settings:

  • Printer: MK4 (with Input Shaper)
  • Print Settings: 0.20mm (SPEED)
  • Filament: Generic PLA
  • Supports: Organic
  • Infill: 15%, with a gyroid fill pattern.
  • Nozzle: 0.4
  • Supports:  Organic - Note: I had mixed results printing these with supports. Printing with generic black PLA I had no problems with organic supports, but it was a major PITA to get the supports out of the inside of the mount. If I make another one I'd probably try printing the base upside-down with supports just to see if that works any better. With the same brand of generic white PLA the organic supports failed to stick every time. Despite this, the prints mostly came out okay. So, YMMV based on your brand of filament.

There is also a .3mf file included so you can reslice to your preferences.

Use

Very simple, first add something inside the base to add weight. I used some small rocks I picked up from Amazon (click here for link) to fill the base. I packed them in quite tight and this made the total weight of the mount a hefty 11.5 ounces (327g). Note: The rocks were a bit dusty, so you may want to rinse and dry them before handling them.

Next, place your camera's base inside the top portion of the weighted base. Then, find your ideal placement of the camera. I added some rubber feet I picked up from Amazon (click here for link)to the bottom to keep the model from moving around.

Feedback

If you have suggestions on how to improve the model, please let me know. Along those lines, if you would like some adjustment to the model that you personally would find helpful, please reach out. I am more than happy to tweak the design to fit someone's needs if I can.

I will continue to update the model with new variants as long and often as needed to ensure it is the best possible quality. See the Updates section below with notes on changes to the models.

Many thanks to @DrakoTrogdor_2747 for the original design concept. If you like this model please consider going to his model's page on Printables (click here) and leaving a ❤.
