Here is a range of cases to enclose a 2.4", 2.8" or 4.3" Nextion screen for the Gaggiuino project. The case mounts magnetically to the front of the Gaggia Classic using 2 (or 4 if you want to be really secure) 60x10x3mm Neodymium magnets.
The cases are split into three sections (with two additional logo files - see explanation below). The XX is either 24, 28 or 43 depending on the screen that you have.
- NextionXX - Case. This is the main case file. Print this with the slanting face down. I used matte black PLA because I like the finish but time will tell whether this is heat resistant enough. An alternative would be PETG/ASA. If you have a multi-colour printer you can also include the NextionXX - Case Logo printed in a different colour to show the logo on the case front. Without this, the logo and lettering are debossed on the front of the case. If you don't want the logo at all just print both files in the same colour.
- Nextion - InternalPlate. This is part of the back plate that attached to the machine. The same plate can be used for all display sizes. I print this separately from the BackPlate to avoid having to use supports. There is also a logo file with this part, which works in the same way as the case logo discussed above.
- Nextion - BackPlate. This holds the magnets and attaches to the InternalPlate using the 5 pins. On my print, the pins and the magnets are a tight push fit and need no adhesive. If you need a more secure fitting, a few drops of cyanoacrylate can be used. I would print this (and the InternalPlate) in PETG/ASA as they have a direct contact with the heated surface of the Gaggia. Again, the same plate can be used for all displays.
The final assembly can be performed by attaching the case to the back plate (after inserting the screen and magnets of course) and then using some small self tapping screws to keep the two halves together, You should find the whole unit affixes to the front of the Gaggia nicely and doesn't slide around because of the lip that tucks under the machine front panel. The wire connection from the PCB to the screen can be fed out through the steam wand hole and sheathed in some cable braiding.
Note: This design is for the Gaggia Classic Pro 2019+ model which has a centralized Gaggia logo. The BackPlate has a cutout that fits over this logo. Some of the earlier Gaggia models have an embossed logo in a different location but you should be able to modify the BackPlate design to use a different cutout and it will all fit nicely. A STEP files of the BackPlate is provided to help with this. Alternatively, if you have one of these machines and can provide the location of the front logo you can email me at [email protected] and I may be able to create a new BackPlate model and upload it here.
A Note on the 4.3" Screen
The official screen is 2.4" but the larger 4.3" screen (which is also capacitive touch) gives a much better user experience in my opinion. If you choose to use the 4.3" screen (which has a higher 480x272) resolution you will need a modified HMI/TFT file to be loaded into the Nextion.
This modification is not officially supported by the Gaggiuino team, so no guarantees, but in my experience it works fine. The version I have been using was created by Discord user itsPointless, and I have included it in a fork of the original Zer0-bit Gaggiuino project on Github. You can find the relevant files here: https://github.com/bowerhaus/gaggiuino/tree/NextionOtherSizes/lcd-hmi . Hopefully, the file names will be self explanatory.
