This basic thrust ball bearing was designed for use with 6mm Airsoft BBs, which are cheap and very spherical (5.95mm+/-0.01mm). I purchased 1000 on Amazon for about $3.50 + shipping.

The balls travel on a 40mm diameter raceway. The assembly has an inner diameter of 28mm, outer diameter of 52mm, and height of 12mm.

After a little experimentation,  I determined that the best raceway diameter is 6.2mm and the best diameter for ball cage holes is 6.4mm. I printed the raceway with 15% infill, but I would recommend 100% to support more weight.

I also experimented with the best number of balls by designing multiple ball cages with a different number of holes for even separation. It seems like fewer balls make the bearing run smoother, but I think that would probably change with higher loads. Try it with and without the ball cage spacer and let me know what you think works best!

I'm also curious if anyone has an easy way to measure the friction of a ball bearing. I placed a paper weight on this bearing and gave it a spin with my hand, but it's difficult to be consistent and accurate enough to compare the number of balls for lowest friction.
