It seems like there's a trend to just slap more motors on an axis and call it a day. I was unhappy with the Y axis limitations I was running into (although I didn't try that hard to navigate around them) so I decided it would be fun to throw another motor on there.
Even though the tensioner looks like a skull, I've been affectionally calling this modification a “Dually” after the trucks with doubled up rear tires.
The hardware needed:
- additional motor
- 4 flat head M3 45mm bolts
- A button head M4 25mm bolt for the tensioner (I reused the tensioner knob from the ender3)
- 4 M5 bolts to connect it to the extrusion ( I used 16mm but anything 8mm or longer should do it)
The caveat of this mod is that the stock bed frame of the ender3 V2 will ram into the motor unless lifted by about 8mm. I've included spacers that can be used with longer bolts to attach the bed frame to the carriage in this Switchwire conversion. This modification would be compatible with the stock Ender3 V2 if not for the issue of lifting the bed frame so if you can figure that out it can be used there as well. Ideally a better bed frame would be cut but I haven't gotten that far.
Please refer to Simon Vez's video on belt synchronization to see how to align and tension a belt with 2 motors. I recommend adjusting the rear motor's pulley as it's easier to access (but I may fix depending on motivation).
Parts were printed in ABS+ with standard Voron settings.
Updates:
- I added a folder containing an alternative spacer that has a cutout for accessing the motor pully screw.
