After finding two Neewer N55CL tripods in my university makerspace with the same broken plastic piece preventing use of the tripods, I designed and installed this fix within an afternoon. Although I printed the part using a Form 3+ printer and Formlabs Flexible 80A resin, I believe this print would work with any FDM printer.
(NOTE: I recommend a performance material PETG or stronger due to the application of the part)
(Disclaimer: I am not liable for the success of one's tripod, and I included the STEP file, as tolerances and dimensions were initially measured with an inaccurate dial caliper; make modifications as needed.)
Steps for installation: (super glue and epoxy is interchangeable here, use best judgement)
- Remove the old plastic piece from the carbon fiber rod
- Remove the carbon rod from the tripod and knock out the metal pins located right below the top of the rod
- Do not lose the metal pins, they are very small
- Insert a rod to push the broken piece out the top
- Remove the old plastic piece from ball mount.
- Pliers and force
- Test fit 3D print part then remove
- Super glue the nut that was within the old part into the 3D print
- Wait for glue to cure before proceeding (there are many ways to accelerate super glue)
- Install the part into the carbon fiber rod with super glue interfacing between the two
- Install metal pins
- pre drill with “small” drill bit
- knock the metal pins into the hole (could use super glue here too)
- Done :) wait for all super glue to cure before intensive use
