Filament Stackers v4
Many of us don't have horizontal wall space for a RepRack or shelves to hold our filament. We need to think vertically.
That's where the Filament Stackers come in. You can expand your stack according to your space and need. Make one tall stack, or lots of short ones. Print out a new Filament Stacker as your collection grows. The large rear bumps hold everything together, and the short ones near the front help keep everything aligned.
It's easy to see, and access what you've got on hand. It has no problem with spools that have been bagged to protect against humidity. Be sure to put the opening facing away so that you can see the filament color more easily.
Bonus:
The holes are finger friendly, so you can grab four or more at a time if you need to move your stack to a new home.
Styles:
This is a single piece model that you can easily color in your slicer by "painting" layer ranges and having your printer swap filament accordingly. There are two variants provided: one with the fancy cutouts and one with solid walls. Note that the "shallow" variant is the only one that currently fits on a Prusa MK4 and that's currently only available with solid walls.
DIMENSIONS:
Outer:
The stackers are 220mm square. The ones with the swatch holder are an extra 5mm longer front to back. You can print them on a Bambu X1 Carbon, but it is too large to print it on a smaller printer like the A1 Mini (180mm³).
Prusa MK4 users: The filament_stackers_v4_medium_shallow_unstyled.stl is only 210mm front to back and is the only model that will fit on a Prusa MK4
Inner:
The inner dimensions of the shallow stacker are 205mm wide x 212.5mm deep x 78mm high. The medium and tall offer more vertical height (88mm & 108mm respectively).
What will fit:
1kg - or smaller - spool in a ziplock bag
boxed filament refill from Bambu
1kg spool in EIBOS 3D Vacuum Bag System (use medium or tall models)
What won't fit
Boxed 1kg spool.
Stackable Shims
If your needs change after printing, & you find you need to give a shelf a little extra height are 3 different Stackable "Shims".
The shims come in 2cm, 3cm, and 4cm height. This height does NOT include the pegs on the top. There is a 3cm shim available for the "shallow" stacker.
Swatch Holders
The short styled version has a variant with a Swatch Holder designed to work with my Hangable Filament Swatches With Translucency Test
There's also an adapter that can be snapped into place on "styled" prints created before this.
Adapter Advice:
Tolerances are very tight on this. Print just one to make sure they're not too tight on your combination of machine and filament.
To snap into place press the bottom of the triangle into the frontmost triangle on opening on the left side. Gently pull the arm outward just a tiny bit, and press the flat behind the triangle and cylinder. It will resist you. This is a good thing. It means it'll resist coming out too. Press hard until it snaps into place.
3D Printing Settings:
These models require no supports. I'd recommend printing with
15% Grid infill
2 wall loops
Outer brim (to help keep the front corners from lifting)
Make sure you've got plenty of cooling to handle the arches.
If you have a 0.6mm nozzle you'll probably want to use it just to save time. This consumes slightly more filament.
WARNING
The Stackable Shims REALLY want to warp up on their front corners. Some people may have reported this issue with the front corners of the stackers themselves.
In my experience printing with a brim is enough to address this. I use an "outer only" brim setting on the stackers themselves to save from having to do a lot of cleanup.
If you need to print the shims, I strongly recommend that you take extra precautions against warping: clean & heated build plate, print with a brim, use adhesive, consistent temperature throughout print, etc.
Print Times & Filament Usage:
All time estimates are based on calculations for the Bambu X1 Carbon.
0.6mm nozzle times assume a 0.3mm layer height.
0.4mm nozzle times assume a 0.2mm layer height.
Filament weight is calculated with 0.6mm because that'll use more.
