I seriously hate putting on wet or sweaty shoes and with the rain we've been having its become a problem that I solved with this. I also don't appreciate the moist stank that shoes can get or the health risks involved in wearing damp shoes/socks.

My idea was to blow fresh air into the toes of the shoes that will then 180 and come out the heel behind the fan and dry out the whole shoe.

This seems to work well even with my super breathable sports shoes and was especially useful for my boots because they aren't breathable at all and so are nearly impossible to dry without blowing the hair dryer right down into them.

This should work for any shoes bigger or smaller as the tube is long enough that you don’t have to insert the whole heel shaped housing into the shoe and the frame can be pushed up to the tongue of bigger shoes.

To Print (for a pair):

  • For Blower Fan:
    • 2x Shoe_Dryer_Frame.stl
    • 2x Shoe_Dryer_Tube.stl
    • 2x Shoe_Dryer_Blower_Fan_Adapter.stl
    • 2x Shoe_Dryer_Extender_Tube.stl (optional)
      • (For boots with ankle support so the fans can reach fresh air)

  • For 40mm Fan:
    • 2x Shoe_Dryer_Frame.stl
    • 2x Shoe_Dryer_Tube.stl
    • 2x Shoe_Dryer_40mm_Fan_Shroud.stl (optional)
      •  (To keep the fan from recirculating air)
    • 2x Shoe_Dryer_Extender_Tube.stl (optional)
      • (For boots with ankle support so the fans can reach fresh air)

Generic info:

Any hardware pictured is M3 sized which is what is also very common on 3D printers so you probably have some lying around.

The fans I'm using are 12V blower fans that I'm running off a 9V wall adapter that I had lying around so they're silent. I found the fans for sale here but I salvaged mine from some dead computer:

The original frame has a mount for a 40mm fan as my original plan was to use one of those but the ones I had lying around were terrible quality and so I switched to the blowers, you might have better luck with the 40mm fans and they are much lower profile.

However, you should make your own adapter and use whatever spare fans you have/are cheap so I've included the dimensions of a 40mm fan so you can use it as a reference. If you need an adapter made, leave me a comment and if I have time I'll upload the most popular ones.

The whole thing prints with zero supports and you can glue to tube on but I used a soldering iron to weld it to the frame. I used M3 heat set inserts to screw the fan adapter on but you could also glue it on too.

What to expect:

When wet (think walking when it was raining or a few hours of sport) my sports shoes used to still be very damp inside after 3 days in a heated room, now they are bone dry in under 2 hours and the gross damp smell they used to have is gone too.

Additions:

  1. Now an adapter to use one 120mm fan is available, you will need one adapter per pair of inserts.
  2. Added a smaller frame to accommodate smaller shoes a bit better.
  3. Added the “tiny frame” because kids shoes are also narrower.
