This is a fun little magnetic toy that, when rotated, has these strokes of resistance as the magnets repel and attract each other. It is kinda like rotating a brushless electric motor, only stronger. It uses 24 5x3mm neodymium magnets, and 2 608ZZ ball bearings.

Two different models are included;

  • the regular one with, what i would call, a pleasant amount of resistance.
  • A version where the magnets are situated closer to the edge which results in the resistance being stronger. Note, the magnet are slightly visible on this one when printing in a light colored plastic. They are completely hidden on the regular version.
  • (I have added a model with space for 6x3mm magnets)

Print Settings

Infill:

100%

Notes:

To get the smoothest surface on the outside, the models should be printed with that surface facing up. note that the support is a bit tricky to remove when doing this.

Infill should be 100% to make the rod, which joins the bearings, strong enough.

Post-Printing

When you've printed the models, remove the support if you've chosen to face them that way. The support can be tricky to remove (at least with my printer) but i ended up prying it away with a thin screwdriver.
Some of the magnets were a bit loose when i inserted them so a dab of super glue will do the trick

Both models require two 608ZZ bearings (the same bearings used in rollerblades). I made some early versions with only one bearing and both halfs kept scraping against each other, two seems to be the sweet spot.

You need 24 magnets (5x3mm) for one toy, 12 in each half.
You can buy 30 of these magnets for just €1. I found these cheap magnets to be of really high quality: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32969476007.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.78f04c4dCBNt6b

It is important, when you install the magnets, that all of the same poles are facing the center, otherwise it will not work.

This picture shows how the magnets should be oriented in the assembly:

once assembled, the two half should not touch or scrape against each other. If they do try to pry it open and use a file to smoothen the surfaces that are close to each other.
