I thought I'd design something simple to get me consistency across slicers so I can decide on the best one to use for me personally. Here's what I discovered.
It works as a pretty reasonable midground between a long torture test where you are simply working out the maximum capability of your printer, something you may use for super detailed or tight tolerance prints, but in frequent practice? Probably not often.
XYZ cubes are great for tuning, but depending on the scale, you'll probably have to print a few to see where you begin to run into issues due to high frequency motion.
(i.e. the distance between ABA where B = distance between the negative portion of the letters which could be your x or y axis)
Most of an XYZ cube will have a very similar B value around so while you are able to get some insight from the letters, you're only really testing the printers ability to deal with the turn at one length.
I'm aware its pretty basic, but being able to check for skipping and under-extrusion at different motion frequencies might just help you tune in your ideal speed for each nozzle diameter, filament, temp and layer height. It's pretty good to see if your estimated print times are accurate too, I used PrusaSlicer for the one in the photos, and the 20mm cube was very accurate on timing, whereas the 10mm cube (which was not 10mm in the end lol) was much much faster than the estimation.
I've also found it useful to scale it down see your feasible minimum text size with each set of print settings so you can find the limit on something quick and cheap before finding out the hard way at the end of a 6 hour print that you can't read the text...
Current Value for Scaling:
- 20mm ^3
Features
- Its a Cube… a nice cube though.
- Text on XY axis
- ‘REAL’ ‘HARD’ ‘TEST’ ‘CUBE’
- Rotate as you wish, hell, flip it on its side and test your infill density settings.
Thanks, enjoy, any improvements are very welcome and leave comments if there's something it's helped you tune to help out others looking for solutions.
