Efficient and fast-printing scoop. I use mine for ice, but you could use it for anything, really, where you need a strong, decent-sized scoop printed fast.

  • Horizontal Print Orientation: The scoop can be printed laying flat, reducing print time and optimizing layer adhesion for strength. The print has wide contact with the bed, preventing toppling failures.
  • No Supports Required: The design is optimized to lay as flat as possible on the print bed, reducing post-processing work. Just print, clean up any stringing, and put it to work!
  • Quick Printing: The design is focused on minimal material use, resulting in a faster print. Short, horizontal prints also print faster than tall prints. The handle has been hollowed in the middle to reduce material, but strengthened with some strategically placed “X” grids.
  • Rounded and chamfered edges: The handle has rounded edges up top, and chamfered edges against the print bed to make the handle comfortable to hold. I've seen some scoops that have rounded edges rising from the print bed, which inevitably leads to quality issues. With a 45 degree chamfer on the bottom of the handle, you can print this without supports and still get good quality.
  • Functional design:
    • The walls of the scoop narrow toward the mouth, to help guide any material into the scoop, but thicken as they approach the handle, to add strength for scooping heavier materials.
    • Top and bottom shelf thicknesses have been increased to add strength. This is done in the “shell thickness” settings, rather than the top and bottom layers, so you should get good shells even if you resize this model down.
    • Perimeters have been upped to 3 for additional lateral strength.
    • The handle joins the body with a generous concave taper, to add strength and prevent lateral shearing.
    • The sides of the scoop body have been given an upwards curve. This lets the scoop keep it's sleek shape, but slightly increases the amount of material the scoop can hold without spilling.
