Ikea Nävlinge as light for bedside reading

I recently purchased two Ikea Nävlinge lights for bedside reading and loved their sleek design and ease of installation. However, the light was too intense for my taste, and it disturbed my wife while I was reading. The lamp emits 220 lumen, which is approximately equal to the light emitted by a 22-watt incandescent bulb. Unfortunately, you cannot buy different lighting modules to reduce the intensity. I am not sure if the light is dimmable.

That’s why I created this custom add-on! It features a grid or collimator that helps focus and soften the light by directing only the rays parallel to its walls. Stray light is absorbed, resulting in a more concentrated and less intense beam. For even better performance, spray the grid with chrome paint to reflect additional light along the edges.

This design is super easy to 3D print without supports. I recommend using PETG, as the light can get slightly warm. I printed with 0.2 mm Layer height. The grid has a tight fit in the tube, but with a tuned printer it should be possible. When necessary scale the grid a tiny bit.

The set includes a “tube” and multiple grids of varying heights, allowing you to experiment with different configurations. Choose between straight grids or ones that focus the light approximately 12 cm in front of the lamp.

For a modern touch, try transparent PETG. It not only looks great but adds a soft glow to your setup, but it gives you more stray light. You can also experiment with coloured transparent filaments.
