I've designed this to be both functional, decorative, and relatively easily modifiable. It's fully passively cooled with the open voroni lattice and supports up to 6 2.5" hard drives or SSDs. If you don't need storage, you can just not print the basement section at all.
Watch the video about making Diskette Case:
Parts
- 6x hard drives or SSDs of your choice
- 6x SATA cables
| M3x10 Screws | 4x | These hold the bottom & feet onto the basement, they MUST be M3x10 or they will not go through enough, resulting in a weak spot | |
| M3x8 Screws | 40x | M3x6 will also work, just won't grab as well, M3x10 will poke through a bit | |
| ATX PSU | 1x | modular or semi-modular is preferable | |
| Printed Parts | 1x | Print the main structure in something strong like PETG or ABS. PLA for the side panels is completely fine | |
| Mini-ATX Mobo | 1x |
| |
| 30mm Button | 1x | Something like https://metzler-electronics.com/metzler-push-button-momentary-30mm-led-circular-illumination-green-ip67-ik10-stainless-steel-flat-soldering-contacts | |
| Mobo Screws | 4x | These are M3x5, no standoffs are required | |
| Dupont Connectors | 2x | 4x | These are for the power switch, if you choose a power button with an LED built in you will need 2 more |
| Drives or SSDs | 6x | Currently the design only allows for 2.5" HDDs or SSDs for the sake of size, please let me know if you would like a 3.5" version | |
| SATA Cables | 6x | Just like the drive count, you can of course choose to have less | |
| Zip Ties | 8x | These fasten the 3 main sections together, I would recommend attaching the mobo tray and PSU holder together first, then onto the basement | |
| Drive Screws | 12x | Usually, these are M3, but double check about your specific drive first | |
Assembly
- Zip tie the mono tray and power supply tray together
- Partially Zip tie the basement on (just attach to two which do not overlap with the drive tray
- screw your drives onto the drive tray
- Zip tie the tray with the drives on
- Screw in the motherboard (make sure to add your I/O shield first if you have one
- Fit in and screw on the PSU and plug in necessary cables
- Plug in all the connections for the drives and power supply
- Cable manage if you desire
- Screw on the bottom
- Attach the basement side panels
- Add the power button to its panel and plug in it's Dupont connector to the power button header on the motherboard
- Screw on the rest of the side panels (Use diagrams on photos 6 & 7)
- Install your software (I chose TrueNAS Scale)
- Enjoy!
Variations
- If you simply want a nice looking ITX case and don't need the drive space, simply print the mobo tray and PSU holder without the basement and then screw the base on directly to that.
- Coming soon: vector files for laser cut side panels
Contributing/remixing
I absolutely encourage modifying this to your liking, things like side panels are super easy to customize in Fusion. If you notice any problems which I didn't catch please email me at
[email protected] or send me a DM on Instagram on Bluesky
Notes
*It does not include a hole in the back for a graphics card, you will need to rely on integrated graphics
*Print the main structural parts (mono tray, PSU holder, basement, & bottom) in PETG, ABS, or ASA they are not strong enough in PLA, the side panels are absolutely fine in PLA
