Motivation
This is a slight remix of my Parametric Out of Marbles Bucket Tower Suspension Shelf design that can be used as a shelf for anything. I thought it was unique enough that others might enjoy it as well.
Solution
This design has the following features:
- Securely mounts to a vertical surface
- Fully parametric providing customization of all dimensions
- Ability to make small adjustments to laterally (side-to-side) level the shelf (assumes the vertical surface is plumb)
- Minimal geometry to reduce space required on the mounting surface
- (Optional) Honeycomb cutouts to minimize required filament while maintaining strength in the orientation of the forces (i.e. vertical).
- (Optional) Front corner border geometry to prevent items from falling off the sides
Customization
- The Fusion file is included. You can customize most of the parameters (DESIGN | SOLID | MODIFY | Change Parameters) like printer tolerances and mounting screw diameters to suit your needs. The most common parameters you should need are Favorited. The non‑favorited parameters should work as well but may require more tinkering to repair broken downstream features.
- The honeycomb cutout features are available as a selection set if you would like to suppress them to create a solid shelf. You can also selectively suppress certain honeycomb cells for a unique mix of solid and honeycomb. If you do modify the honeycomb, pay special attention to the Comments of the ShelfAnchorOffset parameter.
- The border features are also available as a selection set, but suppressing them will require more extensive repairs to the timeline.
Materials
- Suspension cable – some type of high tensile strength filament (e.g. string, wire, etc.). I used fishing line.
- Printed parts
- (1) Shelf
- The provided shelf model is the maximum size that will fit on a MK4S print bed
- (2) Support Tabs
- (2*) Suspension Anchors
- (1) Shelf
- Hardware
- (Optional) (4) Drywall anchors
- (2*) If not using the printed Suspension Anchors, alternative hardware pieces (e.g. eyelet hooks, etc.) are required.
Printing
See the attached .3mf for my settings and model orientation (supports not required). I printed in PETG on a Prusa MK4S.
Post-Processing
Make sure the support tabs fit snug in the shelf and clean out the mounting slots as necessary.
Installation
Measure with as much precision as possible (e.g. laser level). All measurements can be taken from Fusion (DESIGN | SOLID | INSPECT | Measure)…of course round as necessary.
1. Mount the support tabs
a. Measure, mark, and (optionally) pre-drill the support tabs’ hole centers.
b. (Drywall only) Install the wall anchors
c. Mount the support tabs ensuring the tabs are straight up

2. Slide the shelf completely over the support tabs

3. Mount the suspension anchors. The top end of the suspension cables can be mounted anywhere and in any way that provides the necessary tension to each of the front corners of the shelf. If using the suspension anchors:
a. Measure, mark, and (optionally) pre-drill the suspension anchors’ hole centers.
b. (Drywall only) Install the wall anchors
c. Mount the suspension anchors or your alternative suspension support hardware

4. Securely tie a suspension cable to each shelf corner

5. Securely tie the suspension cable to each suspension anchor/hardware.
6. Check for level adjusting the suspension cables’ tension as necessary.
