After replacing this $60 remote, I wanted a case that offered better protection. Nothing I could find suited my needs.

I have 4 dogs and a 6 year old. I had my remote in a silicone case, but the dogs really like the feel of silicone in their teeth.. so does the 6 year old.

There are plenty of cases available from other makers, but most are just shells that don't cover the top at all.

I needed something more rigid that would hide all of the existing teeth marks and help prevent the constant accidental button presses from dogs playing on the couch, or shifting butts.

I also wanted something low profile and removable.

Plus I wanted to get some more practice with surface modeling in SolidWorks.

Many mistakes were made, many lessons learned, and way more time was spent than it would have taken to earn the money to buy something similar on amazon, but I wanted something useful to share with the Printables community. So, here is the result.

Model Selection Notes:

The STLs are intended for single color prints, but the .3mf has logos/text modifiers for the play, home, back, and mute buttons.

Printing Notes:

What has worked best for me so far:

  • ASA
  • .15mm LH, "Structural" profile3 perimeters, modified as described below
  • 100% infill
  • Bottom infill, Archimedian Chords
  • Breakaway snug supports on the overhangs around the “Siri” button only, with 0 “soluble” Z spacing
  • 0 interface pattern spacing with 3 interface layers

I printed from ASA, mostly for the matte look while maintaining better strength than matte PLA.

PLA should work without issues, but the slip joint is only .8mm thick, so YMMV.

Assembly Notes:

Place the remote in the Top half first, then slide the bottom on.

Make sure not to catch the Siri button as you slide. It may need to be pulled out slightly during assembly.

The back end has a small detent groove which should snap together to hold everything in place.
