Summary
I have cats, and they are curious when the printer starts printing. So I needed a way to keep them out. What started out as taping some plexi glass to my IKEA Bror shelf turned into this. We'll see where it goes from here.
Basically, this is a double hinged door for a wide IKEA Bror shelf. It's mostly printed parts, but with some magnets (from amazon), spare IKEA Bror screws and square nuts (free from IKEA), and ~2mm plexi glass from Home Depot that I cut to size.
Part List
- Plexiglass (2) 18" x 24" x 1/8" sheets. I bought these. Exact thickness doesn't matter too much but 1/8" works with the screws and hinge spacing and stuff I made.
- (4) IKEA Screws (part number: 190230) and square bolts (part number: 190231). I learned that you can actually order spare small parts from IKEA for free here. It took about 10 days, and I only needed 2 more cause I had 2 extra already, but it worked!
- Magnets for door latch (1.8mm thick x 10mm diameter). I bought these from amazon, and used the largest ones.
Steps
If you wanted to reproduce exactly what I made, here are the steps:
1) Print all 4 hinges (bottom left, bottom right, top left, and top right). Use extra walls (4?) to make them stronger. Make sure to add supports for all overhangs, I used organic due to the part shapes. The left/right are just mirrors of the same model.
2) Print 12 bolts and 12 nuts.
3) Cut plexiglass rectangles to size - so it takes up about ½ of the shelf opening. (I did this with an exacto knife, a long metal ruler, on a cutting pad. Make sure its a fresh blade, make many gentle cuts - It took me 60-80 passes for each cut through my 1/8" thick plexi. Be careful, don't cut your finger, cutting plexi can be slippery, wear eye protection!)
4) Attach Hinges to Bror frame using IKEA screws & square nuts - only one is required for each hinge, look at the straight-on overall picture to see where they go.
5) Slide plexiglass sheet into place, and mark the holes with a permanate marker.
6) Drill all holes. I used wood drill bits, starting from a tiny size, and moving up 3 or 4 times until I got to the final size. I forget the exact final hole size, should be the same as the holes in the hinges, just check the model.
7) Attache the plexiglass to the hinges using the 3d-printed bolts and nuts. (I found it easier to take the hinges off the IKEA Bror shelf to do this.)
8) Print the magnetic latches.
9) Super glue a magnet into each door latch.
10) Clip door latches onto Bror frame.
11) Place magnets for door on latch magnets. Put superglue on them, and swing the door closed into the magnets. This ensure the magnets line up correctly. Once the glue dries, open the door and the magnet should be attached to the door, but latch to the door latches magnetically when you close them.
12) Watch you cat pry the magnetic door open anyway.
13) Sit and contemplate stronger door locking mechanism. Will maybe update this model once I make that.
